Today I had to stick up for one of the bands I really like, A Day To Remember. Apparently they're "wannabe emo screamo punk", according to Mr. A. But I like the band for a reason, obviously I enjoy their music and think it's good if I'm listening to it, so to each their own.
It bothers me when someone insults the music I listen to, I don't know why. Probably because the artist has done a lot for me, or they make me happy, or inspire me, or something like that. That's why I listen to music, because it makes me feel something. So when someone insults it, the only thing I can think is "you don't know what this band means to me". Maybe I'm just being oversensitive, but if it's one of my favourite bands, they're one of my favourite bands for a reason, and I like that to be respected.
If you don't like it that's okay, I don't mind hearing your opinion, but when someone insists it's bad and refuses to accept another opinion, that's when it bothers me.
This post may or may not be directed right at you, Mr. A. (;
You can like them all you want, did I ever say you couldn't? I just think you would be hard pressed to defend them to me when they're part of the Victory Records machine that is almost single handledly responsible for the cookie cutter state of the warped tour/x games/red bull/hot topic/mall punk America that angsty teenagers of all socioeconomic demographics are wallowing in. How's that for a defenisible opinion? Feel free to rebut at any time with examples, but if you can prove to me that A Day To Remember is demonstrably different from the bulk of Victory Records output while they were on Victory Records, I'd love to hear your thoughts. By the way, Victory Records is a reprehensible outfit, and a pit of moral turpitude that masquerades under the banner of DIY ethic while espousing the worst behaviors of the major labels they choose to decry, with the sole purpose of rallying impressionable kids on the fringe and taking their money. In short, hypocrisy of the highest order.
ReplyDeleteI respect your opinion and understand where you're coming from; your argument was really well said and thought out but it looks like we're just going to have to disagree on this one.
